Brief description of the activity

MADRID is Spain's capital since 1561 but the Catholic King and Queen, Isabela and Fernado, had been several times before in the city, making their stays here on the journeys to other cities to celebrate "Cortes" (Parliament). XVIth c., is the time of consolidation of new proposals: The HUMANISM. It was going to be widely accepted in the european context and the works influenced by this style were going to be the most influencial on Madrid architecture for future centuries, characterising it for ever. Italien architecture as a part of Spain and the monumental Monastry of El Escorial, both sources of influence will remain present in Madrid for centuries.

At the same time, nobility is installing in the new capital to be closer to the Royal Crown and building their new residences. Religious orders are as well moving to the capital. All this activity will produce and importamt amount of new buildings conceived in the new terms of "Humanism architecture", mostly on palaces, mansion houses and churches. Some of them will be converted some years later in cloister monastries where the singles nobel ladies will go to live taking with enormous collections of art. others will be enlarged or changed their use or will disapear letting us today their names on streets or squares where once they were.

In this walk it is seen an extraordinary model representing that rennaissance Madrid as a whole, which allow us to be able to check that reality, its real escale, dimensions and the first attempts for urban reforms but not only because we can also get in buildigs, cloisters or old façades fully rennaissance: The main interest of that walk goes to discover small hidden jewels in the city, including the disapeared ones, through our old graphical documents representing those buildings at that time. The most unchanging elements of Madrid architecture comes from then.

The "Enlightenment" contributed to Madrid's history of architecture with one of the most singular, exclusive and fine cases in Europe of its kind up to the point of having claimed the attention of UNESCO to consider the inclusion of the main areas as a part of de World Heritage List.

One of the main contributions was an urban and architectural ensemble whose design was inspired in roman antiquity, becoming an unique and no-precedents example on XVIIIth c., european urban planning: "El Salón del Prado.

Urban aspect is not only the most remarquable but as well the constructions and works dedicated to sciences and administration built inside: Original "Natural sciences cabinet", "Prado Museum" today,  "Astronomical Observatory", "Royal Botanical Gardens", "Royal Customs House", "Royal Academy of Beaux Arts", "Royal Academy of History". Brief description of the activity

Formerly part of the royal lands on this side of the city up to 19th c., vicinity of the former “Buen Retiro Royal Palace”, these pieces of land were sold by the Queen Isabel II to build aristocratic residences in the enlargement listed in 1837 Madrid master plan. The result is of an astonishing and particular homogeneous area.

Many important buildings are located in the area such as “antigua Casa de Correos” (former Post Office, Town Hall today), the remains of the ancient “Buen Retiro Royal Palace”, such as the Ballroom or the “Throne Hall” where many paintings from Velázquez were hung, the Stock Echange or the much more recent enlargement of Prado Museum.

The area comprises a very good combination of works of architecture ranging from XVIII c. to XX c.

All these architecture landmarks lay in an harmonious and peaceful urban pattern, including some beautiful and characteristic streets of all Madrid.

Brief description of the activity

First settlements in Madrid dates back to visigothic times, presumably at the same area where muslims were going to settle later. On history of Madrid books appears the visigothic terms of “Miaccum” and “Matrice” related to the later "Magerit" of muslim camp.

The muslims are the ones who will build the first walls in IXth c., still remaining in several fragments. Christian troops coming from the north were crossing the Guadarrama mountains by the Jarama, Henares and Manzanares rivers and to re-conquest the lost territories before.

Defensive and control conditions were the final factors to choose this promontory and to keep safe the passage from south to north to umeyad tribes. That will be the time of creation of the so called “Magerit”, the origin of current name of Madrid.

Later events through centuries were going to modify and to take part on this symbolic place: From the "arab Alcázar" to the XVIIIc. royal palace passing by the administrative buildings around the palace, borbonic ministries, 3 medieval churches, the royal stables or urban and public places, as well as cultural installations or a monastry directly connected to the royal palaceo, the site of an ancient mosque and the current cathedral.
